The story appears simple on the surface, but is revealed, especially after multiple viewings, as more multi-layered and textured than Cassavetes at his best. Ostensibly it concerns a 14-year old Catholic girl, Wynne (Agutter) growing up in this post-modern wasteland, who develops a crush on her much older adoptive brother (Marshall)- a crush which perversely deepens and grows into infatuation once she starts to believe he is the local sex killer. This is in itself an idea that makes you sit up and jolt, but as the narrative develops, it continues not necessarily along a linear path but in several confusing and fascinating directions: the family's history, (detailed effectively in chilling flashback during an improvised seance) is a chequered one, and has suffered at least one major relocation and upheaval in the last ten years. At the crux, however, it's the depiction of socialal changes that make I Start Counting so fascinating and elevate its language far beyond the confines of the standard horror film. The major subtext- that teenage girls were maturing more quickly than before, and developing full sexual and romantic appetites (even if in thought rather than deed) but were not possessed of enough discretion to make the right choices- was a step forward for a genre in which its young females had previously been portrayed as bimbo victims (Cover Girl Killer and The Night Caller spring to mind), but not one that all viewers would necessarily agree with. But most striking of all, and possibly the most enduring image which the viewer will take away with them, is of the masterful symbolism with which director Greene invests every shot. Every inch of the Kinch family's world- their house, their walls, their TV, Agutters underwear, bedroom furniture and toys, Sutcliffe's clothes, Marshalls van, the local Catholic church, their town centre, their record shop) - is painted a bright, scintillating white- a white which, by inference, is slowly becoming smudged and corrupted with the dirt of the outside world. White also symbolises, of course, purity and innocence (two qualities Catholic schoolgirls are supposed to hold dear), and it is into this world of innocence that the ever-present red bus (a symbol of violation and penetration), conducted by the lecherous yet similarly juvenile Simon Ward, makes regular journeys. The allegory is further expanded in one scene where Agutter believes she sees the Christ figure in church weeping blood: by the time we acknowledge it, its gone, but the seed has already been planted. Rarely in a genre production has the use of colour and background been so important or effective in creating a uniformity of mood. I Start Counting is as near-perfect an end to a decade as one could hope for, and exactly the kind of film people should be making now- which is, of course, exactly why they never will. 令人惊喜的大手笔的改动！叙述方式变成了禁闭岛+穆赫兰道，精神内核则成了彻头彻尾的悲剧。这时候才意识到茨先生温柔善良到给遗作都留了一线光明的尾巴，创造出救世主般的外力（在现实中是大夫帮助男主逃出酒店，在幻境中是“我”拉男主回归理智）给了死局一种理想化的破解方式——保持了理智的同时“赢”了“棋局”。而电影版则是牢牢砌死永无出口的铁屋子，自我的维系与斗争的胜利只能二选一——非精神摧毁而不能赢。船上斗棋获胜是翻转整个设定的神来之笔，试问谁在读小说时没有幻想过博士大获全胜的爽文呢？图穷匕见之时才知道绝无爽文，只余绝望。果然是冷酷的编剧才能有立意极高的改编，如果戛然而止在灿烂阳光中就神作了。（小细节：警察局长认输后翻开棋谱，镜头给到一位大师，他的名字正是男主在船上的化名；而男主离开酒店时签的也是范列文）

我看的字幕版本翻译的太随便，什么黄秋生乱糟糟的
相对于原著进行了一些改动，交叉叙事、构图、场景设置都不错。情节依托色彩、物、语言和隐喻在现实和过去之间来回穿梭，建立联系的同时又相互区别，比如代表Nazi的黑色军服和船员的白色工服作为可辨认的徽记（同时也是强制-自由的极与极）。前一半铺垫得有点过长，有点可惜的是象棋被摧毁之后那段，个人感觉还差点意思，自我分裂还可以更痛苦更有张力，经过一对赤裸-尊严之人反而有了些审美化的倾向。最后船上对弈的视觉语言很有意思，浮现的回忆在电影里以环绕形态重新在场。结局……怎么还有点乐观主义😂总体而言，本来就很有畅销书味道的茨威格，被改编成了更符合刻板印象的主流大众电影，这一点还是让我挺咯噔的。

真成“草饲肉”叻。还是有几分清新的浑然天成感啊。
让主角杀的第一个人是个袭击者，第二个是个恬不知耻的涩男。
题材新奇，但没有预想的有趣，不过整体基调还是挺诙谐幽默的，也适当中和了下尺度不算小的肢解斩件画面，中后段一处动物世界捕猎和男主扑杀素食者的蒙太奇感觉带有隐喻，极端的素食主义者大概会抵制这片吧。（字幕君把电视节目里的连环杀手意译成黄秋生和<人肉叉烧包>）
帕氏夫妇屠杀记，黄秋生的叉烧包躺枪！伊朗猪肉，雪花牛肉得要肥的，黑色幽默风格，素食主义和肉食主义者的社会对立！最后结尾转变的有些快，假如警察把那三个被杀的素食者当凶手，可能讽刺效果会更好！看完后突然想吃五花肉了！

故事在多个维度空间内切换，精神层面的占据主导，棋局只是个引子，战争初期软拘和海上逃难，把命运设在那个动荡的年代，值得反思。
好久没有看到这么优秀的喜剧片了，尤其是配合着动物世界的部分
